Inlays and Onlays

Columbia Dental Care is proud to be your premier choice when you’re looking for a Fremont dentist. As your trusted cosmetic dentist, we’re committed to offering a wide variety of dentistry procedures in order to give you the great smile you’ve always desired. Two of these procedures that we offer in our Fremont office are inlays and onlays.

What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are usually referred to as partial crowns. These are used when a tooth is too damaged for a filling, but not damaged enough to receive a crown. These restorations are meant to repair teeth that have been fractured or have suffered from a moderate level of decay. Inlays are used to repair the center of the tooth in the areas between the cusps (the rounded edges of the tooth). Onlays are more extensive; they can be used for the cusps or the entire biting surface of the tooth.

The Inlay and Onlay Procedure

The procedures for inlays and onlays will generally follow these steps:

  • First, the decayed area of the tooth is removed.
  • A mold of the tooth is taken and sent to the dental lab where they’ll create a restoration made from porcelain, gold, or a composite resin.
  • Since the restoration will take approximately two to three weeks, a temporary inlay or onlay will be placed on the tooth during that time period.
  • When you come in for your next visit, the inlay or onlay will be placed in your mouth and set with cement.

Benefits of Inlays and Onlays

There are many benefits to getting inlays and onlays. A few of these reasons include:

  • They allow a patient to conserve more of the tooth structure as compared to a crown.
  • Inlays and onlays are very durable; they can last for up to 30 years!
  • They prolong tooth life and lessen the need for a patient to receive further dental treatment.
  • While traditional metal fillings can actually decrease the strength of a tooth, inlays and onlays greatly increase a tooth’s strength.
  • They can blend in and look just like your natural teeth.
